What is naturopathic medicine?
One of the biggest dilemmas of today’s health care is that it largely employs pharmaceutical drugs that are designed to control symptoms. For example, statins are prescribed for high cholesterol and blood pressure medication is prescribed for high blood pressure. There is no dispute that these drugs save lives and serve an important role in today’s health care. They can allow for comfort that enable one to continue to work towards better health. However, although symptoms of an illness are important to address, it is not were treatment should stop. Symptom relief is not the true answer to our health issues because it does not address the underlying cause. If you stop your blood pressure medication and your high blood pressure returns, the cause was not addressed. Symptoms can be thought of as our body’s cry for help; a way to tell us that something is not running smoothly as it should. When these symptoms are covered up and forgotten with medications, the disease still exists and over time will cause other symptoms in the body to appear as the disease process continues to progress.
Naturopathy follows a holistic approach to health care in that the whole person is treated and recognizes that each aspect of a persons health (physical, mental, environmental and emotional) are all intricately related. Naturopathic medicine stands distinct from conventional medicine in its philosophy of healing. The ultimate goal of naturopathy is to promote optimal health in an individual by finding and addressing the underlying cause of their condition, rather than focusing on the symptoms of the disease the individual has.
My role as a naturopathic doctor is to get to know my patients and to learn and understand their health goals so that together, we can reach them. I aim to educate and get my patients actively participating in their swim upstream towards health. I provide individualized treatments that are safe, natural, and are tailored to each person’s unique set of needs and health goals.
Join me in finding your way towards optimal health.
